About converting PNG to GIF
Convert PNG to GIF for basic animation support and wide compatibility. Use it when the target platform — an email client, an old CMS, a messaging app — only accepts GIF: colors are reduced to the 256-color palette, but flat graphics survive the trip intact.
PNG is a lossless raster format released in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It became the default format for graphics on the web whenever exact pixel fidelity matters. GIF has existed since 1987 and remains the internet's lingua franca for short looping animations and reaction images, long after technically superior formats arrived.
This conversion crosses compression philosophies: PNG is lossless and GIF is lossy. That matters for file size, editability, and how the image behaves if you open and save it again later.
When to use PNG vs GIF
Choose GIF when short looping animations, memes, simple graphics with flat colors, email animations, and embedded previews in tools that only accept GIF. Keep PNG when logos, icons, screenshots, line art, memes, illustrations with text, and any image that will be edited and re-exported multiple times.
On strengths: PNG brings crisp edges on text and logos, transparent backgrounds, unlimited re-saving without quality loss, and near-universal support in browsers, editors, and operating systems. GIF brings universal compatibility spanning four decades of software, reliable looping animation, and perfect predictability — every platform renders GIF identically.
The trade-off: Photographs stored as PNG are usually much larger than the same photo as JPEG, WEBP, or AVIF, because lossless compression cannot shrink detailed imagery efficiently. Only 256 colors produce banding on photos, animations cannot exceed a fraction of a second smoothly, and file sizes are large for their visual quality.
How to convert PNG to GIF
The converter runs entirely in this browser tab — there is no upload, no account, and no file-size harvesting. Follow these steps:
- Drop your PNG files onto the converter above, or click the drop zone to browse. Up to 20 files can queue at once, each up to 25 MB.
- The output defaults to GIF. Adjust the quality slider if the format is lossy, or resize/crop first if you also want to change dimensions.
- Press Convert. Decoding and encoding happen in browser memory using Canvas — your pixels never leave the device.
- Preview the result, then download it individually or grab the whole batch as a ZIP.

Tips for a clean PNG → GIF conversion
- Work from the highest-quality PNG source you have. Converting from an already-compressed copy stacks compression artifacts on top of each other.
- Aim for quality 85–90. Above that, file size climbs for almost no visible gain; below 70, banding and blockiness appear around edges.
- Batch similar images together — files with comparable dimensions convert in the same pass, which keeps the workflow fast.
- Keep the original file. Even lossless conversions can subtly change color profiles, and the source is your safety net.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PNG to GIF converter free?+
Yes. All image conversions are completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and unlimited usage.
Are my images uploaded to a server?+
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser via the HTML5 Canvas API. Your files are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
Will converting PNG to GIF reduce quality?+
Because PNG is lossless, the conversion starts from perfect pixel data. GIF uses lossy compression, so the encoder discards information it considers imperceptible — keep the quality slider between 85 and 100 for a result that is visually indistinguishable from the original.
Can I convert multiple PNG files at once?+
Yes — drop up to 20 files into the converter and they will all be processed in a single batch. Each file can be up to 25 MB. The batch downloads as a ZIP, or you can save results individually from the preview.
Does this converter work on phones and tablets?+
Yes. The converter is a responsive web app that runs in any modern mobile browser — iOS Safari, Chrome for Android, and others. Files are processed on-device, so mobile uploads are not sent anywhere and the connection speed does not affect conversion time.
