About converting JPEG to AVIF
Convert JPEG to AVIF for superior compression. AVIF files are typically 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality, so photo-heavy pages load faster and cost less bandwidth. The same pixels, the same look, roughly half the bytes.
JPEG (often written JPG) has been the standard photographic format since the early 1990s. Almost every camera, phone, and image viewer in existence can read it. AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, derived from the royalty-free AV1 video codec and standardized in 2019. It represents the current ceiling of compression efficiency.
Both formats share the same compression philosophy, so the conversion is mainly about compatibility and file size rather than a change in image quality behaviour.
When to use JPEG vs AVIF
Choose AVIF when modern websites, image CDNs, progressive web apps, and any workflow where bandwidth savings outweigh legacy compatibility. Keep JPEG when photographs, images for email and documents, stock photos, print uploads, and anywhere a viewer or system refuses newer formats.
On strengths: JPEG brings excellent file-size reduction for photographs and complex images, tiny historical footprint, and guaranteed compatibility with print labs, email clients, and legacy software. AVIF brings often 50% smaller than JPEG at the same perceptual quality, with strong protection against compression artifacts on faces, gradients, and flat color.
The trade-off: No transparency support, and every re-save removes a little more quality. Text and hard edges develop visible "mosquito" artifacts faster than photographic detail does. Encoding is computationally heavier, very old devices may render it slowly, and some legacy editors and operating systems still do not support it.
How to convert JPEG to AVIF
The converter runs entirely in this browser tab — there is no upload, no account, and no file-size harvesting. Follow these steps:
- Drop your JPEG files onto the converter above, or click the drop zone to browse. Up to 20 files can queue at once, each up to 25 MB.
- The output defaults to AVIF. Adjust the quality slider if the format is lossy, or resize/crop first if you also want to change dimensions.
- Press Convert. Decoding and encoding happen in browser memory using Canvas — your pixels never leave the device.
- Preview the result, then download it individually or grab the whole batch as a ZIP.
About JPEG — Joint Photographic Experts Group
JPEG (often written JPG) has been the standard photographic format since the early 1990s. Almost every camera, phone, and image viewer in existence can read it.
Typical uses: Photographs, images for email and documents, stock photos, print uploads, and anywhere a viewer or system refuses newer formats.
About AVIF — AV1 Image File Format

Typical uses: Modern websites, image CDNs, progressive web apps, and any workflow where bandwidth savings outweigh legacy compatibility.
Tips for a clean JPEG → AVIF conversion
- Work from the highest-quality JPEG source you have. Converting from an already-compressed copy stacks compression artifacts on top of each other.
- Aim for quality 85–90. Above that, file size climbs for almost no visible gain; below 70, banding and blockiness appear around edges.
- Batch similar images together — files with comparable dimensions convert in the same pass, which keeps the workflow fast.
- Keep the original file. Even lossless conversions can subtly change color profiles, and the source is your safety net.
Frequently asked questions
Is this JPEG to AVIF converter free?+
Yes. All image conversions are completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and unlimited usage.
Are my images uploaded to a server?+
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser via the HTML5 Canvas API. Your files are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
Will converting JPEG to AVIF reduce quality?+
Both JPEG and AVIF use lossy compression, so the image is re-encoded rather than copied. Staying at quality 85 or above keeps the output visually identical to the source; dropping lower trades detail for smaller files.
Can I convert multiple JPEG files at once?+
Yes — drop up to 20 files into the converter and they will all be processed in a single batch. Each file can be up to 25 MB. The batch downloads as a ZIP, or you can save results individually from the preview.
Does this converter work on phones and tablets?+
Yes. The converter is a responsive web app that runs in any modern mobile browser — iOS Safari, Chrome for Android, and others. Files are processed on-device, so mobile uploads are not sent anywhere and the connection speed does not affect conversion time.
