About converting HEIC to ICO

Convert an iPhone HEIC photo into a Windows-style ICO icon set directly in your browser. Square-crop the portrait, embed 16–256 px sizes, and use your own photo as a favicon or desktop shortcut icon.

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11, built on the same HEVC video codec used for 4K recording. It stores more image in fewer bytes. ICO is the native Windows icon format, used for taskbar shortcuts, application executables, and — most commonly today — browser favicons.

This conversion crosses compression philosophies: HEIC is lossy and ICO is lossless. That matters for file size, editability, and how the image behaves if you open and save it again later.

When to use HEIC vs ICO

Choose ICO when website favicons, PWA icons, Windows desktop shortcuts, browser tabs, and application branding assets. Keep HEIC when storing photos on Apple devices, and — after conversion — sharing those photos anywhere that still expects JPEG or PNG.

On strengths: HEIC brings roughly halves file size at photo quality comparable to JPEG, preserves Live Photo data, and keeps 10-bit color for smoother gradients. ICO brings required format for Windows shortcuts and classic favicons, multi-resolution packing, and transparent backgrounds on every supported size.

The trade-off: Windows, Android, the web, most email servers, and countless third-party apps cannot open HEIC natively without installing a codec or converting first. Square dimensions only, limited color handling compared to PNG, and no purpose outside icon display — it is not a general image format.

One more consideration: HEIC is tuned for photographic imagery full of gradients and fine detail, while ICO performs best on graphics with flat colors, hard edges, or limited palettes. Moving a photograph into the graphic-oriented format tends to look worse per byte than staying in the photo-oriented one.

How to convert HEIC to ICO

The converter runs entirely in this browser tab — there is no upload, no account, and no file-size harvesting. Follow these steps:

  1. Drop your HEIC files onto the converter above, or click the drop zone to browse. Up to 20 files can queue at once, each up to 25 MB.
  2. The output defaults to ICO. Adjust the quality slider if the format is lossy, or resize/crop first if you also want to change dimensions.
  3. Press Convert. Decoding and encoding happen in browser memory using Canvas — your pixels never leave the device.
  4. Preview the result, then download it individually or grab the whole batch as a ZIP.

About HEIC — High Efficiency Image Container

Tips for a clean HEIC → ICO conversion

  • Work from the highest-quality HEIC source you have. Converting from an already-compressed copy stacks compression artifacts on top of each other.
  • You can re-export ICO as many times as needed without losing data — ideal if the file will be edited repeatedly.
  • Batch similar images together — files with comparable dimensions convert in the same pass, which keeps the workflow fast.
  • Check the preview at 100% zoom. If fine detail (text, foliage, fabric) looks smeared, raise the quality slider or reconsider the target format.

Frequently asked questions

Is this HEIC to ICO converter free?+

Yes. All image conversions are completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and unlimited usage.

Are my images uploaded to a server?+

No. All conversion happens locally in your browser via the HTML5 Canvas API. Your files are never uploaded or stored anywhere.

Will converting HEIC to ICO reduce quality?+

ICO is a lossless format, so the converted file stores every decoded pixel exactly — quality does not degrade during conversion, and you can re-save it repeatedly without generational loss.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?+

Yes — drop up to 20 files into the converter and they will all be processed in a single batch. Each file can be up to 25 MB. The batch downloads as a ZIP, or you can save results individually from the preview.

Does this converter work on phones and tablets?+

Yes. The converter is a responsive web app that runs in any modern mobile browser — iOS Safari, Chrome for Android, and others. Files are processed on-device, so mobile uploads are not sent anywhere and the connection speed does not affect conversion time.
