About converting HEIC to BMP

Convert HEIC photos from an iPhone to BMP for legacy Windows applications that only read uncompressed bitmaps. Industrial software, old scanners, and vintage editors gain access to your iPhone photos through the simplest possible pixel container.

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11, built on the same HEVC video codec used for 4K recording. It stores more image in fewer bytes. BMP is one of the oldest Windows image formats, dating to the early days of Microsoft Windows. It stores pixels with essentially no compression.

This conversion crosses compression philosophies: HEIC is lossy and BMP is lossless. That matters for file size, editability, and how the image behaves if you open and save it again later.

When to use HEIC vs BMP

Choose BMP when legacy Windows applications, pixel-art editing, machine-vision pipelines, raw texture data, and software that predates modern formats. Keep HEIC when storing photos on Apple devices, and — after conversion — sharing those photos anywhere that still expects JPEG or PNG.

On strengths: HEIC brings roughly halves file size at photo quality comparable to JPEG, preserves Live Photo data, and keeps 10-bit color for smoother gradients. BMP brings zero decoding complexity, bit-exact fidelity, and acceptance by legacy industrial, scientific, and manufacturing software that refuses compressed formats.

The trade-off: Windows, Android, the web, most email servers, and countless third-party apps cannot open HEIC natively without installing a codec or converting first. Extremely large files — a single screen-sized BMP can be several megabytes — plus weak transparency support and poor handling of photographic content.

One more consideration: HEIC is tuned for photographic imagery full of gradients and fine detail, while BMP performs best on graphics with flat colors, hard edges, or limited palettes. Moving a photograph into the graphic-oriented format tends to look worse per byte than staying in the photo-oriented one.

How to convert HEIC to BMP

The converter runs entirely in this browser tab — there is no upload, no account, and no file-size harvesting. Follow these steps:

  1. Drop your HEIC files onto the converter above, or click the drop zone to browse. Up to 20 files can queue at once, each up to 25 MB.
  2. The output defaults to BMP. Adjust the quality slider if the format is lossy, or resize/crop first if you also want to change dimensions.
  3. Press Convert. Decoding and encoding happen in browser memory using Canvas — your pixels never leave the device.
  4. Preview the result, then download it individually or grab the whole batch as a ZIP.

About HEIC — High Efficiency Image Container

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11, built on the same HEVC video codec used for 4K recording. It stores more image in fewer bytes.

Typical uses: Storing photos on Apple devices, and — after conversion — sharing those photos anywhere that still expects JPEG or PNG.

About BMP — Bitmap picture

Typical uses: Legacy Windows applications, pixel-art editing, machine-vision pipelines, raw texture data, and software that predates modern formats.

Tips for a clean HEIC → BMP conversion

  • Work from the highest-quality HEIC source you have. Converting from an already-compressed copy stacks compression artifacts on top of each other.
  • You can re-export BMP as many times as needed without losing data — ideal if the file will be edited repeatedly.
  • Batch similar images together — files with comparable dimensions convert in the same pass, which keeps the workflow fast.
  • Check the preview at 100% zoom. If fine detail (text, foliage, fabric) looks smeared, raise the quality slider or reconsider the target format.

Frequently asked questions

Is this HEIC to BMP converter free?+

Yes. All image conversions are completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and unlimited usage.

Are my images uploaded to a server?+

No. All conversion happens locally in your browser via the HTML5 Canvas API. Your files are never uploaded or stored anywhere.

Will converting HEIC to BMP reduce quality?+

BMP is a lossless format, so the converted file stores every decoded pixel exactly — quality does not degrade during conversion, and you can re-save it repeatedly without generational loss.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?+

Yes — drop up to 20 files into the converter and they will all be processed in a single batch. Each file can be up to 25 MB. The batch downloads as a ZIP, or you can save results individually from the preview.

Does this converter work on phones and tablets?+

Yes. The converter is a responsive web app that runs in any modern mobile browser — iOS Safari, Chrome for Android, and others. Files are processed on-device, so mobile uploads are not sent anywhere and the connection speed does not affect conversion time.
