About converting GIF to BMP
Convert GIF to BMP for uncompressed output used by legacy image editors. Animation is flattened to the first frame, and the raw pixels become editable in software that cannot read GIF.
GIF has existed since 1987 and remains the internet's lingua franca for short looping animations and reaction images, long after technically superior formats arrived. BMP is one of the oldest Windows image formats, dating to the early days of Microsoft Windows. It stores pixels with essentially no compression.
This conversion crosses compression philosophies: GIF is lossy and BMP is lossless. That matters for file size, editability, and how the image behaves if you open and save it again later.
When to use GIF vs BMP
Choose BMP when legacy Windows applications, pixel-art editing, machine-vision pipelines, raw texture data, and software that predates modern formats. Keep GIF when short looping animations, memes, simple graphics with flat colors, email animations, and embedded previews in tools that only accept GIF.
On strengths: GIF brings universal compatibility spanning four decades of software, reliable looping animation, and perfect predictability — every platform renders GIF identically. BMP brings zero decoding complexity, bit-exact fidelity, and acceptance by legacy industrial, scientific, and manufacturing software that refuses compressed formats.
The trade-off: Only 256 colors produce banding on photos, animations cannot exceed a fraction of a second smoothly, and file sizes are large for their visual quality. Extremely large files — a single screen-sized BMP can be several megabytes — plus weak transparency support and poor handling of photographic content.
How to convert GIF to BMP
The converter runs entirely in this browser tab — there is no upload, no account, and no file-size harvesting. Follow these steps:
- Drop your GIF files onto the converter above, or click the drop zone to browse. Up to 20 files can queue at once, each up to 25 MB.
- The output defaults to BMP. Adjust the quality slider if the format is lossy, or resize/crop first if you also want to change dimensions.
- Press Convert. Decoding and encoding happen in browser memory using Canvas — your pixels never leave the device.
- Preview the result, then download it individually or grab the whole batch as a ZIP.
About GIF — Graphics Interchange Format

Tips for a clean GIF → BMP conversion
- Work from the highest-quality GIF source you have. Converting from an already-compressed copy stacks compression artifacts on top of each other.
- You can re-export BMP as many times as needed without losing data — ideal if the file will be edited repeatedly.
- Flatten transparency carefully: check the preview for white or black halos along previously transparent edges before downloading.
- Keep the original file. Even lossless conversions can subtly change color profiles, and the source is your safety net.
Frequently asked questions
Is this GIF to BMP converter free?+
Yes. All image conversions are completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and unlimited usage.
Are my images uploaded to a server?+
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser via the HTML5 Canvas API. Your files are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
Will converting GIF to BMP reduce quality?+
BMP is a lossless format, so the converted file stores every decoded pixel exactly — quality does not degrade during conversion, and you can re-save it repeatedly without generational loss.
Can I convert multiple GIF files at once?+
Yes — drop up to 20 files into the converter and they will all be processed in a single batch. Each file can be up to 25 MB. The batch downloads as a ZIP, or you can save results individually from the preview.
What happens to transparent areas when converting to BMP?+
BMP cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are flattened onto a solid background during conversion. If you need to keep transparency, output to PNG, WEBP, or AVIF instead — both are available in the format picker.
