About converting BMP to JPEG
Convert BMP to JPEG for significantly smaller file sizes. Ideal for photographs and complex images: a multi-megabyte raw bitmap becomes a few hundred kilobytes, ready for email, documents, and web pages, with no visible loss at standard quality settings.
BMP is one of the oldest Windows image formats, dating to the early days of Microsoft Windows. It stores pixels with essentially no compression. JPEG (often written JPG) has been the standard photographic format since the early 1990s. Almost every camera, phone, and image viewer in existence can read it.
This conversion crosses compression philosophies: BMP is lossless and JPEG is lossy. That matters for file size, editability, and how the image behaves if you open and save it again later.
When to use BMP vs JPEG
Choose JPEG when photographs, images for email and documents, stock photos, print uploads, and anywhere a viewer or system refuses newer formats. Keep BMP when legacy Windows applications, pixel-art editing, machine-vision pipelines, raw texture data, and software that predates modern formats.
On strengths: BMP brings zero decoding complexity, bit-exact fidelity, and acceptance by legacy industrial, scientific, and manufacturing software that refuses compressed formats. JPEG brings excellent file-size reduction for photographs and complex images, tiny historical footprint, and guaranteed compatibility with print labs, email clients, and legacy software.
The trade-off: Extremely large files — a single screen-sized BMP can be several megabytes — plus weak transparency support and poor handling of photographic content. No transparency support, and every re-save removes a little more quality. Text and hard edges develop visible "mosquito" artifacts faster than photographic detail does.
One more consideration: JPEG is tuned for photographic imagery full of gradients and fine detail, while BMP performs best on graphics with flat colors, hard edges, or limited palettes. Moving a photograph into the graphic-oriented format tends to look worse per byte than staying in the photo-oriented one.
How to convert BMP to JPEG
The converter runs entirely in this browser tab — there is no upload, no account, and no file-size harvesting. Follow these steps:
- Drop your BMP files onto the converter above, or click the drop zone to browse. Up to 20 files can queue at once, each up to 25 MB.
- The output defaults to JPEG. Adjust the quality slider if the format is lossy, or resize/crop first if you also want to change dimensions.
- Press Convert. Decoding and encoding happen in browser memory using Canvas — your pixels never leave the device.
- Preview the result, then download it individually or grab the whole batch as a ZIP.
About BMP — Bitmap picture
BMP is one of the oldest Windows image formats, dating to the early days of Microsoft Windows. It stores pixels with essentially no compression.
Typical uses: Legacy Windows applications, pixel-art editing, machine-vision pipelines, raw texture data, and software that predates modern formats.
About JPEG — Joint Photographic Experts Group
JPEG (often written JPG) has been the standard photographic format since the early 1990s. Almost every camera, phone, and image viewer in existence can read it.
Typical uses: Photographs, images for email and documents, stock photos, print uploads, and anywhere a viewer or system refuses newer formats.
Tips for a clean BMP → JPEG conversion
- Work from the highest-quality BMP source you have. Converting from an already-compressed copy stacks compression artifacts on top of each other.
- Aim for quality 85–90. Above that, file size climbs for almost no visible gain; below 70, banding and blockiness appear around edges.
- Batch similar images together — files with comparable dimensions convert in the same pass, which keeps the workflow fast.
- Check the preview at 100% zoom. If fine detail (text, foliage, fabric) looks smeared, raise the quality slider or reconsider the target format.
Frequently asked questions
Is this BMP to JPEG converter free?+
Yes. All image conversions are completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and unlimited usage.
Are my images uploaded to a server?+
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser via the HTML5 Canvas API. Your files are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
Will converting BMP to JPEG reduce quality?+
Because BMP is lossless, the conversion starts from perfect pixel data. JPEG uses lossy compression, so the encoder discards information it considers imperceptible — keep the quality slider between 85 and 100 for a result that is visually indistinguishable from the original.
Can I convert multiple BMP files at once?+
Yes — drop up to 20 files into the converter and they will all be processed in a single batch. Each file can be up to 25 MB. The batch downloads as a ZIP, or you can save results individually from the preview.
Does this converter work on phones and tablets?+
Yes. The converter is a responsive web app that runs in any modern mobile browser — iOS Safari, Chrome for Android, and others. Files are processed on-device, so mobile uploads are not sent anywhere and the connection speed does not affect conversion time.
